Materials

Can of Compressed AIr – Can be purchased at any office supply store for around $6.

Raytek MT4 Mini Infrared Thermometer – The ability to take the temperature of just about anything without touching it is amazing, not to mention entertaining. I took a reading of my desklamp and found out the bulb was 212?F, Wow!

Casio Men’s Pathfinder Triple Sensor Altimeter/Barometer/ Digital Compass Watch – For the money, this watch is a steal. Barometer, compass and thermometer all in one place. Great for hiking or scientific exploration. The manual is really dense, but operating the watch was relatively easy. My biggest problem was with the temperature, it was constantly bouncing around.

Barometric Pressure Fast Facts

A column of air one square inch in cross-section, measured from sea level to the top of the atmosphere, would weigh approximately 14.7 lbs per square inch or 1013.25 mb.

An increase in elevation results in a decrease in barometeric pressure.</l1>

As pressure decreases, temperature also decreases.

Special thanks to Mike Ogasawara and David Doig.

Materials

Milk Bottle (or other bottle with an egg size opening)
Hard Boiled Egg
Matches
Paper

Instructions

To get the egg into the bottle you:

Hard boil several eggs for about 12 mins.

Create a tightly wrapped piece of paper that will burn slowly.

Light the paper and drop it into the bottle.

Have an assistant place the egg on the opening.

Watch in amazement!

To get the egg back out you:

Turn the bottle over and shake out any loose matter.

Adjust the egg so it makes a seal with the opening.

Place the bottle over your lips so it seals.

Blow forcefully into the bottle and move it away from your face.

Watch in amazement!

Explanation

The burning paper causes air inside of the bottle to heat up and expand forcing some of the air out of the bottle. When the egg seals the top of the bottle, the flame goes out and the air on the inside of the bottle begins to cool and contract, which results in less air pressure inside the bottle. The air pressure outside is now greater and this causes the air pressure on the outside of the bottle to push the egg into the bottle.

Density of Water = 1.0 g/cm3

1 milliliter (ml) = 1 cubic centimer (cm3)

Density greater than one sinks

Density less than or equal to one floats

Saturn is the only planet that would float if you placed it in water. It has a density of about 0.7 g/cm3

Handout

If you decide to perform this experiment with your class, you can use the following handout to have your students calculate the density of the two cans of soda.
